MARCH UPDATE

there were a few groups here already.

it was nearing the night hours, where people went to the beach to fool around and have a good time. without the worry of being sunburned and all that stuff. Alice walked quietly, alone.

she cast a glance at the friend groups idly, smiling despite her inner loneliness, before setting to work. tonight she wanted to sit and stare across the ocean. a small fire pit was built.

and a small fire got going.

it illuminated the young woman sitting on a log. her long hair was tied in two braids, her bathing suit under a long white sundress. just in case she wanted to go for a swim at night!

a very large yet fashionable sunhat completed her look with sandals. she'd happily take out a few hotdogs, roasting them on the fire and chewing thoughtfully. the lemonade at her feet left unopened for now.

Primarina waved to her trainer, who waved back. she had come here without anyone else, but she was used to solidarity. it was okay. surely.

the hoenn star tournament had kept aaron in slateport city for longer than he expected. for the past year, he had flitted from town to town without lingering very long, but it was nice to stay in one place and watch hoenn's finest beat the crap out of each other. maybe he would get the crap beat out of him, too, though he was unsure if his ragtag team was up to snuff.

as if to prove his point, his pikachu shifted uncomfortably across his shoulders. out of the corner of his eye, he saw her expression darken deviously. her nose twitched once, twice, then she sprang off him and began racing across the sand. he followed in her wake at his lazy pace, quirking a brow as she ignored the crowds and made her way towards a girl sitting alone.

"shit," he murmured under his breath, hurrying after her. "get back here, you—!"

he watched, helplessly, as the pikachu scrambled up on the log, holding something that reflected the firelight in her forepaws.

"hey, i'm really sorry about her," he said once he was in speaking distance, brows furrowed with concern for the person his pokemon had chosen to harass. he had had to make this apology more than once due to her sticky fingers. as he got closer, he realized two things: his pikachu had somehow gotten a bottle of lemonade, and the girl beneath the large sun hat looked awfully familiar.

"wait a sec, you're," he snapped his fingers like he was trying to summon her name to his mind, "you're alice, right? we battled that one time, didn't we?" his smile grew brighter as he recalled where he knew her from. "and i totally smoked you?"

"oh, hello there, sweetie."

Alice beams at the Pikachu who decided to join her. the mouse had decided to take one of the Lemonades and that was fine with her. she brought a whole case - just in case! within moments though, another would come.

he apologizes for his partner but she waves a pale hand. "it's okay. I think she's just thirsty...?" Alice's eyes strayed to the Pikachu again, wondering if that was true "she can have it. no harm, no foul."

but the young man wasn't done. he echoes her name, causing her to look up. her ocean blue eyes peek around the sunhat. "yes, I'm Alice" she confirms politely, wincing at his idea of saying 'she lost terribly' "you're... Aaron, correct?"

she had also seen him around Lilycove a few times.

aaron's pikachu shakes up the contents of the bottle with glee at the girl's permission to drink. she nibbles on the cap and watches her trainer with wide, innocent eyes as he snaps his fingers and recalls his encounter with the girl beside her.

"i'm joking," he tells her hastily, a boyish smile on his face, feeling the ghost of remorse at the way she winces at her past defeat. "yeah, i'm aaron."

he takes a seat on the other side of his pikachu and opens the lemonade for her. is this type of lemonade safe for pokemon? the question hangs over his head as he watches her clumsily lift the drink to her mouth. well, if she dies she dies, he supposes.

"y'know, you don't have to feel bad about losing to me. i kick a lot of people's asses." or so he tells her. aaron glances beneath her big sun hat to gauge her reaction, hoping this goes over better than the last.

his eyes drift towards the fire, the sight and smell of hot dogs roasting above the flames drawing his attention like a moth to a bright light.

"and you feel good about it?" Alice asks him naively, lifting a brow. he seemed proud of his supposed power - she didn't know the feeling yet, being a novice. a playful grin tugs at her lips, wondering if she could tease him back so easily "y'know, most young men would take it easy on delicate young ladies."

she tried not to think of all the times she had lost 'terribly' to others.

maybe she should be a Ranger, like her mentor. but the ache of his lonely cabin was enough for her. it used to be busy, with various people and Pokemon. coming in at seemingly random times, asking for help. Alice was just thankful Lilycove gave her jobs to do to get by. she shakes her head lightly. "I know I'm not good enough to participate."

which begged the question if he was. "I've just been minding the snack stand" Alice adds with a sheepish smile. the various hot gossip around the tournament was enough to put her off competing. too many 'star trainers'... "what about you, Aaron?" she would ask.

"i do," the words roll off his tongue with ease, a wide grin crinkling the boyish features of his face. "men, women, nonbinary — i'll kick anyone's ass. and don't give me that delicate young lady shit either!" he jabs an accusing finger in the air between them, poorly concealing an amused smirk. "just because i beat you doesn't mean you didn't give me hell during our battle." in hindsight, he sounds a lot less cool admitting it wasn't an uncontested win, but the confession gets away from him before he can stop himself.

"oh yeah? i've been minding the snack stand, too." he puts his hand on his stomach and feels it rumble beneath his touch. he would go mind the shit out of the snack stand right now if it was open. "me? nahhh. i want to give everyone else a chance." this joke sounds a bit more hollow than the others.

aaron falls silent, staring thoughtfully out across the ocean. after a moment, he says, "so, um, are you gonna eat all these hot dogs?" shameless.

"oh, I'm just teasing you" Alice giggles into her palms, amused he'd be so defensive about it "I'm nowhere near challenging gyms" she sighs now, staring across the ocean of nothingness "so I thought you... you may have found me boring to battle." with no real friends in Hoenn beyond her Pokémon, it felt silly to worry about a stranger's thoughts. but she did.

for all his ego, Aaron was nice. she could tell he was. he just hid behind his confidence. "is that so?" she chuckles "a shame you aren't going to beat the Elite Four participating. or the Champion?" ah, yes, she had noticed them among the mundane crowd. even a few Gym Leaders were going to bat. ranks changed in Hoenn almost every day it seemed.

hard to keep track. "go ahead" she lifts one of the charred hotdogs from the fire and handed it to Aaron with a bright smile "if I eat them all, I'll get fat."

"obviously you're not boring," he refutes earnestly, for once. "juuust not as good as me. but, listen, it's okay because — like i said — most people aren't." and then he's right back to teasing, the boyish smile on his face growing wider to soften the comment into something lighthearted and playful.

"oh, they're competing in the tournament?" aaron isn't terribly good at lying, so the question comes across more like he's very obviously playing dumb for the sake of playing dumb. "didn't know that. guess they're safe from me this time around." one badge under his belt would give him the big head he needs to do something crazy like challenge the champion in a tournament.

until then, he's going to help himself to some hot dogs. he takes the sausage and holds it reverently in his hands for a moment before biting into it. it's hotter than anticipated, so he sits there, open-mouthed, trying to make it bearable without having to spit it out.

"what?" his voice is muffled as he speaks around chewed up hot dog. "i'm going to get fat way before you do." he finally swallows (no homo), sparing alice from having to suffer misophonia any longer. "fuck it, eat another, alice." he mows down the rest of the hot dog and reaches for another — and she wouldn't be wrong to think he's taking it off the fire for himself at this point, but he holds the skewer out for her instead. "here, go ahead."

Alice giggles a bit. "is that so? maybe one day I'll make it a mission to beat you" she had so many other things to do, other 'missions' to do... but she could stand to be motivated to train a bit more, yeah? "you're a terrible liar, Aaron" she adds, seeing through his guise with a playful smirk "I heard some of the Gym Leaders want to hand out badges if they lost... wouldn't you want one?" it was her dream to actually get a badge. just one. then she could do other gym battles when she felt it was time.

the fact he was eager to make her eat was funny too. his slack jawed expression was amusing, the shock and defiance adorable almost. "you really don't know women, do you?" she shoots back as he holds up a charred hot dog "that's our way of saying; eat as much as you like, I'll just take a bit more time. I don't want to be rude and deny a guest more food than what I have." Alice giggles, taking the hot dog though. whatever was left would be wrapped in tin foil and placed in the fridge.

she didn't get many jobs that had good pay these days. she was frugal and tried to save what she could for next time. but if it meant she had to share, she'd make sure her 'guest' would get more food. Aaron was a boy; didn't boys eat much more than girls? "also, I'm a slow eater" she adds "I like to savor the food a bit, I think." not a jab but a playful tease in his direction.

"wait, really?" aaron is like a growlithe eyeing their owner's unattended dinner at the mention of badges being handed out at the tournament. he sits up a little straighter, turns his body to face her better. she's fucking with him, isn't she? or — is his dumbass really missing out on badge-collecting right now? "shit" is all he can say to that.

he chivalrously offers her the hot dog he was planning to eat, only for her to reveal that she isn't actually worried about her weight. it's girlish subterfuge to make sure he gets his fair share of dogs, she explains. "i guess i don't." aaron wants to leave it at that, but the exchange needles at him, even after she redirects the conversation.

"guys aren't psychic-types, y'know? if girls want guys to get them, just say what you really mean without all the extra shit." he takes a breath. oh shit, i'm venting. time for a smooth recovery. "shit — sorry. that wasn't at you, i'm just — i have two sisters and, y'know, i've dated girls and — and what i'm trying to get at is, guys are shit at reading between the lines, y'know?"

"maybe you're right" Alice smiles almost sadly, unbothered by his outburst though "but" she should really explain herself too, shouldn't she? "I've never dated a guy" that was one way of saying she'd never even been asked or interested to ask "so you'll have to excuse my little tricks. I just think you're fun to tease. I took it too far, I'm sorry, Aaron."

she really was.

"plus I'm not good at the whole 'talking to guys' outside of work related stuff" she adds with a defeated sigh "I barely talked through our battle" Alice reminds him gently "I'm just an awkward turtle." when it boiled down to it, yes she was. she had no idea how to be friends with other people. she didn't even know if Aaron wanted to be friends.

she smiles a bit more cheerfully. "besides" she adds "if I told you you looked thin you might have taken it offensively. so I'd rather just skirt around the issue, yanno?"

damn, alice has never had a boyfriend before? she's kind of a noob — even aaron has been in a relationship and he's unemployed and eats food off the floor pretty indiscriminately. "nah, you're fine. it's my bad," he says, waving a hand like he's trying to waft her apology away from him. he shouldn't have gotten heated over something so stupid, but it's a bit of a sore spot she'd been prodding at.

she pushes on, explaining that she's an awkward turtle. the sour mood sweetens with her smile. "i know i'm thin," he laughs. "for the record, you can say whatever you want to me. i won't get offended. in fact, i've probably heard it before. multiple times."

he plucks another hot dog off the fire and watches steam roll off the tip (no homo). "also, y'know, talking to me is pretty good practice." he looks her way. "i'm stupid as fuck, so every guy you meet will be a breeze to talk to."

aaron has an idea. that's never a good sign.

with renewed excitement, he says, "hey, wait, i can teach you how to talk to guys!" it sounds like a fun undertaking, taking a shy girl and turning her into a baddie. "let's start with the 'awkward turtle' shit. just — never use that phrase again because ... listen, just don't." excellent teaching so far.

she blinks, feeling her cheeks heat up. embarrassment was a thing. she felt it right now. Aaron seemed to lowkey be judging her. she could feel it even if he didn't say anything about it directly. "i-it's not a big deal..." even if Hoenn was half relationships and half training sometimes. she did see happy couples walk by a few times in Lilycove. it did make her somewhat envious.

but that was only human.

"because of your sisters?" Alice huffs a bit, amused and offended from the silence judgement. but it was mostly amusement "I'm not your sister; I... I'm your friend? I won't want to say anything that's mean; even if you have thick skin" she posed the question uneasily, wondering if he really was her friend. "and you're not stupid. for the record."

but maybe he was.

his next statements caught her off guard. she recoils briefly, eyes flashing even more open. "wha-?" who says she needed his help? she could only imagine what his idea of 'talking to guys' was all about "I" wanted to refuse but he seemed so excited "a-as long as you don't try to change who I am..." she utters "it's fine to learn but I don't want a make-over."

"it's not just my sisters; it's my friends, too." aaron just has an aura about him that attracts people who like nothing more than to roast him. he doesn't know why, but everyone else does after a few minutes of spending time with him. "and you're my friend, sooo ... say whatever you want. i don't give a fuck. honestly."

"i'm a little stupid, let's be honest," he fires back.

to punctuate his point, he elects himself as her new relationship coach. his act of self-hiring has her visibly taken aback, eyes wide and uncertain. he can't keep back the laugh that rises in his throat. "i'm not going to change you, just ... hm ... enhance you? just trust me."

he takes a bite of his still-quite-hot hot dog. "okay, lemme think of a scenario to test the waters." he chews thoughtfully. if alice looks into his eyes right now, she'll probably be able to catch a glimpse of a dedenne running on a wheel, turning the gears in his head.

"okay, imagine you're at a party." he gestures broadly. alice doesn't really come across like the party type to aaron, but hopefully she can suspend her disbelief long enough for him to get through this training session. "and you see a guy and, like, he's pretty handsome and interesting and cool and whatever, right? so you go up to him and say ... ?"

he motions towards alice for an answer.
